Fall 2020: We have several guidelines in place in order to help maintain a safe and healthy learning environment.
Masks are mandatory for all children, teachers, and parents on-site. We ask that you keep your masks on in parking areas at pick-up/ drop off.
P4 asks that families be responsible to wash masks or arrange for rotation each day so that Littles are arriving daily with clean masks. Each student/family must provide their own nose/mouth masks.
Please mark your child’s name on their mask.
Parent/ Guardian sign in at the gate.
Students and teachers will be required to sanitize hands prior to entering class.
Families will be asked for a health update each day. Families must inform us if anyone in their family is ill and must stay home if they’re feeling sick (even if non-flu symptoms.)
Labeled hooks will be provided for each child with adequate spacing, to hang belongings each day. Items will not be traded between students.
Toys from home are not permitted on site.
Frequent hand washing and use of hand sanitizer during the session.
Small group ratio.
Partner snack, lunch, and craft time parings with ample social distancing space.
Play areas will be sanitized before class begins, midday/at lunchtime, at the end of the day, and as needed throughout the session.
The same group of children in attendance each month.
No drop-in care for the month of September.
Distance learning also available for families interested in care but not yet ready for in-person play.

OPHELIA DE SERRES
Teacher Ophelia a.k.a Miss. Penny
Ophelia is a second generation childcare provider, spending her formative years in her mum’s home daycare in her native Toronto. Her philosophy is informed by her experience as a homeschooling mother, children’s advocate and artist.
A Reiki Master, Ophelia's approach to learning invites slowing down, simplifying & being more present in play.
Ophelia has served as an ESL teacher, nanny and home daycare provider for a combined 20 years. Her approach to child safety is influenced by her background as an assaulted women and children’s counselor advocate. She founded the nonprofit organization (Wo)Men Speak Out in 2007 with her husband Chris, which seeks to increase dialogue in our communities and schools on abuse and safety. She previously served as a volunteer with the Seattle Police Department, working with victims of domestic violence. Ophelia co-created and runs Northwest Community Chatter, an online community building platform in North Seattle.
CHRISTOPHER DE SERRES
Chris is an advocate for victims of domestic violence and child abuse. He seeks to educate our communities about abuse and helps implement preventative measures to protect our most vulnerable populations. He is an occasional ‘pennypants professional’ and is a self-professed instigator of fun. He believes strongly that all children should jump often and works diligently to assist the kids in the proper way of pretending to be a pirate and/or knight of the round table. It takes practice. He loves to read children’s books aloud. He learned to eat his vegetables at a very young age, but he never quite outgrew juice boxes. Chris is a long-time Climb Leader with the Seattle Mountaineers and is currently working towards his Masters degree in Couples & Family Therapy.
Learning IS fun!
Our curriculum is rooted in a play-based approach. Young children learn most effectively through play. Our activities challenge children to use all 5 of their senses. An apple needs to be touched, sliced open, examined, and eaten. We need to explore where that apple comes from by creating crafts of apple trees and orchards. We want to know what season produces apples and why. Stimulating a child’s mind to be curious and inquisitive is our priority. Whether it be music, painting, sensory exercises, or group projects, we want to fully engage our children in a way that is meaningful to them. We are inspired in many ways by the Montessori, Reggio Emilia, and Waldorf approaches.
However, our approach is uniquely our own.
PENNY PUMPERNICKEL PANTS PLAYCARE MISSION
Our belief is that early childhood is the most crucial period of development. We aim to provide a safe, creative, and encouraging environment that will feed their ever-evolving passions. Our outdoor space is one in which creative self-expression, kindness & collaboration are encouraged and emphasized. We believe healthy play allows children their own discoveries, joy and mutual respect. It is with great love that we look forward to playing a role in evolving their unique spirit in this amazing period of life. Get in touch to learn more about us.
